FAQs

General

Where are you located?

We are located at 5530 KY Hwy 39 S, Crab Orchard, KY 40419. A convenient drive from Lexington, in the heart of Kentucky. All visits to the farm must be pre-arranged to ensure the safety and security of our animals.

What is your helmet policy?

ALL riders must wear a helmet the entire time they are mounted. This is applicable to outside groups as well; helmet rental is offered to outside groups if needed.

What is your weather policy?

We will cancel all rides if the weather.com forecast for the 40419 zip code predicts greater than 70% chance of rain, snow, or other severe weather (including extreme heat and cold). Rides may also be canceled on the day following heavy rainfall to protect our trails and ensure safety. Cancellation emails will be sent to the email address that was used to book, and calls will be made to the phone number provided on the reservation (voicemails will be left if there is no answer). We strive to give as much advance notice as possible, and every effort will be made to reschedule your ride.

Is there a minimum age for riders?

We are unable to accommodate riders under the age of 16 on our private guided trail experience, unless they have 1-2 years of prior riding experience. All riders under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian accompany them on the ride (including outside groups). Horsemanship lessons are only offered to riders over 18.

What is your cancellation policy?

Guided and haul-in trail ride reservations may be modified or cancelled up to 48 hours before your scheduled ride. Horsemanship lessons may be modified or cancelled up to 24 hours before your scheduled lesson. Please keep in mind that Insomniac Farms coordinates and prepares horses ahead of time, and requests as much advanced notice as possible if you are not able to make your scheduled ride time.

Private Guided Trail Experience

How long does the experience last?

We don't want anyone to feel rushed so please plan to be at our farm for at least an hour and a half. Actual saddle time is about an hour, plus safety instruction and refreshments.

How many guests can you accommodate at once?

At this time we limit our groups to no more than 2 at a time, ensuring you will have a private experience. We plan to accommodate larger groups in the future, as we search carefully for additional trail horses.

Do you have a weight limit?

To care for our horses' bodies, we do have a weight limit of 220 lbs.

Do I need riding experience?

Our horses are experienced and accustomed to beginner riders, including people who have never ridden before. Riders should be in good physical condition, able to mount and dismount on their own, with a mounting block, and show that they can steer and stop their horse. We will give safety and riding instruction prior to mounting and before we embark on our ride.

Is there any trotting or cantering on the trail ride?

All trail rides are ridden at the walk, to ensure our experience is safe and enjoyable for everyone. If all riders in your group are experienced and would like to include a faster pace, there are parts of the trail that can be ridden at a trot and canter.

Who else will be riding?

We only offer exclusive rides to maintain the quality of the experience.  There will not be any additional riders that are not in your group.

Can I ride without a guide?

All riders must be accompanied by an Insomniac Farms guide when riding our horses. Outside groups are permitted to book exclusive use of the trails, and are permitted to ride without an Insomniac Farms guide at their own risk.

What if I'm running late to my scheduled experience?

Horses are coordinated and prepared in advance of your experience, in consideration for their workload and our time, any riders not present at the time of their ride will forfeit their reservation and will not be eligible for a refund. Please plan for traffic and arrive at least 10 minutes before your ride.

Haul-in Trail Rides

How does it work?

The farm is available to be booked for exclusive use of the property and trails. You may bring up to ten (10) horses, with proof of current negative coggins, to enjoy our peaceful trails without a guide. Our trails include multiple water crossings, narrow inclines and declines, and flat areas for trotting and cantering. We have a large area for trailer parking and a circular driveway for easy turnaround.

How long are the trails?

Our trails wind through our 47 acres of paradise, with different route options based on rider preference. Currently, there is approximately 2 miles of cleared trails, with more being cleared every week.

How difficult are the trails?

Our trails are perfect for green and experienced horses and riders alike! Most of the trails are soft footing, barefoot friendly, and are partially shaded. The valley is remote and does not get reliable cell service, and there is wildlife and bugs present, safety precautions are recommended.

What other amenities are included?

Outside horses are not permitted in the barn, but cold water access is provided behind the barn for hosing off and offering water. Grazing is permitted in the grass near trailer parking and opposite the driveway. Out of consideration for our horses' health, outside horses are not permitted to graze near or make physical contact with Insomniac Farms horses at anytime. Cold refreshments and snacks are available for purchase and groups are welcome to remain after riding to cool off.

How do I schedule?

Through our "Book Online" tab, you will be able to book your haul-in trail ride. Once booked, your group will have exclusive access to the property and trails beginning at 9 AM on the scheduled day. You may come anytime, but all horses and trailers must be off the farm by dusk. You must email proof of current negative coggins for each horse that will be on the farm no later than 24 hours before your scheduled ride or your ride will be canceled. These documents can send to insomniacfarms@gmail.com. All riders must sign a liability waiver, and any riders under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Horsemanship Lessons

When are lessons offered?

Our lessons are offered primarily on weekdays, with afternoon and evening availability, and weekends, on a limited basis with priority given to our guided trail rides. We welcome and encourage prospective lesson students to visit our farm prior to scheduling their introductory lesson to ensure the best fit!

Is there a minimum age?

At this time, our horsemanship lessons are only being offered to those 18 and over.

Is there a weight limit?

In consideration for our horses' health, we do have a weight limit of 220 lbs.

Do I need riding experience?

Our horses are experienced and accustomed to beginner riders, and our instructor has taught many beginners over the years, most of whom had no prior horse experience. Riders should be in good health and physical condition, able to mount and dismount with the help of a mounting block.

Do I have to commit to more lessons?

Lessons are paid for on a monthly basis at $35 per lesson, depending on how many lessons you want to schedule that month. If you cannot make a lesson, we require a 24-hour notice (except in case of emergency), and you may reschedule to another day without affecting your lesson total for the month. If a lesson is cancelled within 24 hours, or the student does not show, they will forfeit that lesson and will not be issued a refund. Unused lessons will roll over to the following month. There is no commitment to lessons, you may schedule as little or often as you like. Occasionally we will have "drop-in" lessons for those who cannot schedule on a monthly basis. Monthly lesson schedules are emailed the last week of the prior month.

How long is the lesson?

Lessons are approximately 45 minutes of instruction time, although we may occasionally run over. Please allow an additional 15 minutes after each lesson for riding aftercare, ie untacking and post-ride grooming.

How many riders can take a lesson at a time?

At this time, we are only offering private lessons to one rider at a time, ensuring that you will have full focus during your lesson.

What is covered in lessons?

Our horsemanship lessons cover all aspects of riding and horse care. We focus on a calm and safe approach to riding with a strong basis in equine-centric foundational horsemanship. We will cover horse anatomy, grooming and tacking, preparing for your first horse (if that is the avenue you choose), and an introduction to trail riding.
